Every June 24th, Cusco dresses in splendor to celebrate Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun—one of the most spectacular cultural events in all of Peru. This ancient celebration, which honors the god Inti (the Sun), is one of the best opportunities to connect with the living essence of the Inca Empire and immerse yourself in the rich culture of the Andes.
What is Inti Raymi?
Inti Raymi was an Inca ceremony that marked the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere and symbolized the rebirth of the sun. During the time of the Tahuantinsuyo (Inca Empire), it was the most important celebration on the Inca calendar, gathering thousands of people in the empire’s capital.
Today, Inti Raymi is a reenactment of that tradition, featuring traditional costumes, Andean music, dances, and ancient rituals. It’s a visual and spiritual experience that transports travelers to the heart of the Andean worldview.

Where is it celebrated?
Inti Raymi is held in three main locations:
Qoricancha (Temple of the Sun) – The ceremony begins here with the Inca greeting the sun.
Plaza de Armas of Cusco – A theatrical performance takes place in front of the authorities and the people.
Sacsayhuamán – This is the central and most impressive event, with a grand open-air reenactment.
What to do during Inti Raymi?
Besides attending the main ceremony, visiting Cusco during this time also allows you to:
Enjoy parades, food festivals, and cultural performances.
Explore archaeological sites like Sacsayhuamán, Qoricancha, and the Cusco Cathedral.
Taste traditional dishes like cuy chactado, chiri uchu, or pachamanca.
Participate in traditional activities such as offerings to Pachamama (Mother Earth) or weaving workshops.

Tips to make the most of Inti Raymi
