Cusco & the Sacred Valley
The Inca heartland, and the launchpad for Machu Picchu.
Cusco, the former capital of the Inca empire and the gateway to Machu Picchu, is where most Peru itineraries begin. Stone streets, Quechua spoken in the markets, and Inca ruins like Sacsayhuaman and Qorikancha on every hillside.
From the city you drop into the Sacred Valley, with the Inca towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo and lower air that's easier to acclimatise to, then ride the train up to Machu Picchu. Add Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lagoon when you want a big high-altitude day.
- Days you'd spend
- 3 to 5
- Best months in Cusco
- April-May, Sept-Oct (dry, fewer crowds)
- Altitude note
- Sleep low (Sacred Valley, 2,800 m) before climbing high, easier on the head.
- One thing to skip
- The "Inca buffet shows" in Cusco. They are tourist-funnel theatre.
"See one place in Peru, and the rest of the country will tell you it should have been this one."
