Where to go in Peru: the regions most first trips combine

Most first trips string a few of these together: the Andes around Cusco, Lake Titicaca, Arequipa and the Colca Canyon, the Amazon, and Lima on the coast. Here's what each region is for, when to go, and how to fit it into a route.

Andes / 2,430-4,200 m

Cusco & the Sacred Valley

The Inca heartland, and the launchpad for Machu Picchu.

Cusco, the former capital of the Inca empire and the gateway to Machu Picchu, is where most Peru itineraries begin. Stone streets, Quechua spoken in the markets, and Inca ruins like Sacsayhuaman and Qorikancha on every hillside.

From the city you drop into the Sacred Valley, with the Inca towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo and lower air that's easier to acclimatise to, then ride the train up to Machu Picchu. Add Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lagoon when you want a big high-altitude day.

Days you'd spend
3 to 5
Best months in Cusco
April-May, Sept-Oct (dry, fewer crowds)
Altitude note
Sleep low (Sacred Valley, 2,800 m) before climbing high, easier on the head.
One thing to skip
The "Inca buffet shows" in Cusco. They are tourist-funnel theatre.

"See one place in Peru, and the rest of the country will tell you it should have been this one."

What you can do here

Totora reed boats and the floating islands of the Uros people on Lake Titicaca near Puno, Peru
Altiplano / 3,812 m

Lake Titicaca

The highest navigable lake in the world, and the islands people still live on.

Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, sits on the Bolivian border near the city of Puno. On the Uros floating islands, families build the very ground they live on out of totora reeds.

On Amantani and Taquile you can stay overnight with a host family and eat what the lake provides. It sits higher than Cusco, so most travellers come here once they've already acclimatised; two or three days is enough to see it properly.

Days you'd spend
2 to 3
Best months at Lake Titicaca
May-September (cold but dry; bring a real coat)
Altitude note
Tougher than Cusco. Drink muna tea, walk slow, eat light.
One thing to know
The Amantani homestays use composting toilets. Worth it.

"You don't so much visit Titicaca as get hosted by it."

An Andean condor gliding over the Colca Canyon near Arequipa, Peru
South / 2,335-4,910 m

Arequipa & Colca Canyon

The white city, and a canyon nearly twice as deep as the Grand Canyon.

Arequipa, Peru's "white city", is built from sillar, a pale volcanic stone that glows at sunset beneath the Misti volcano. Its food scene rivals Lima's, with a fraction of the crowd.

Two hours out, the Colca Canyon falls away beneath you and Andean condors ride the morning thermals at Cruz del Condor. Most travellers do it as an overnight from the city, often with a stop at the Santa Catalina Monastery.

Days you'd spend
3 to 4
Best months in Arequipa
April-November (dry, condors most active)
Altitude note
Colca rim sits at 3,300 m; the pass crosses 4,910 m. Pace it.
One thing to do
The Picanteria ceviche-criollo lunch on a Sunday. Locals only at noon.

"Coffee on a sillar terrace, condors by nine, ceviche by noon."

Juan Pari, Book and Vámonos guide

What you can do here

Aerial view of the Tambopata River winding through the Peruvian Amazon rainforest near Puerto Maldonado
Amazon / 200 m

The Amazon, Tambopata

Drop from the Andes to the rainforest, the biodiversity capital of Peru.

Tambopata, near Puerto Maldonado, is one of the most biodiverse corners of the Peruvian Amazon: macaw clay licks, oxbow lakes, monkeys, caimans, and night walks you hear long before you see.

You stay in jungle lodges deep in the Tambopata National Reserve, so plan three nights minimum. It's a short flight from Cusco, which makes it an easy add-on to a multi-day Peru package once you're done with the highlands.

Days you'd spend
3 nights minimum (anything less is a flight, not a trip)
Best months in the Amazon
May-October (drier, easier travel)
Bring
One pair of light long-sleeve everything. Repellent. A torch.
Don't bring
Heels. A drone. Loud opinions about the food.

"The one region where the wildlife comfortably outnumbers the travellers."

The Miraflores cliffs above the Pacific coastline of Lima, Peru
Coast / Sea level

Lima & the coast

Where every trip lands, and the food capital of South America.

Lima, Peru's capital and the gastronomic capital of South America, is where almost every trip lands, so use the days well. The historic centre and Barranco hold the history; Miraflores holds the cliffs and the sea.

It's a city of ceviche and world-ranked restaurants like Central and Maido, with food tours that explain why. Down the coast, Paracas and the Ballestas Islands add wildlife, within reach of the Nazca Lines.

Days you'd spend
2 + 2 (open and close the trip)
Best months in Lima
December-April (sunny coast, hottest on the trip)
Where to stay
Barranco for vibe; Miraflores for views; San Isidro for early flights
One reservation we'll hold
Maido, Saturday 9 p.m., paid through us, transferable, refundable up to 14 days out.

"Don't treat Lima as a layover. It's the meal you'll be talking about later."

Common questions

What travelers ask before booking

Quick answers from years of helping international visitors plan Peru.

When is the best time to visit Peru?

Dry season (May to October) is most popular for the Andes and Machu Picchu, blue skies, easy hiking. Coastal Lima is warmer December to April. Amazon is good year-round but expect rain. We help match your dates to the routes that work best.

Do I need a visa?

Most travelers from the USA, EU, UK, Canada, and Australia get 90 to 183 days visa-free on arrival. After you book we send a checklist for passport, entry, and any extra documents based on your nationality.

How serious is altitude in Cusco?

Cusco sits at 11,150 ft / 3,400 m, so most visitors feel altitude for 1 to 2 days. We build a gentle first day, recommend hydration, and can pre-arrange coca tea or a local doctor visit if you want extra peace of mind.

Is Peru safe for tourists?

Tourist areas (Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Arequipa, the gringo trail) are well-traveled and safe with normal precautions. Our certified local guides are with you on routes, our drivers are vetted, and we share real-time city tips before you arrive.

How far in advance should I book?

For peak season (June to August), 3 to 4 months ahead gives the best availability for trains and hotels. Off-peak we can often turn around a custom plan in 2 to 3 weeks. Last-minute inquiries are welcome, we tell you honestly what is still possible.

What about food and water safety?

Drink bottled or filtered water (we tell you which hotels filter on-site). The food scene is world-class, Lima alone has multiple top-50 restaurants. We flag any restaurant or street stall we would send our own family to.

Six clicks. Two short fields. One human.

A real person from Book and Vámonos reads every request and gets back to travelers quickly. The form below keeps that next step simple: answer, adjust, and send when you are ready.
